 So what is Sussex2030?

Residents​ of Sussex County formed this nonpartisan grassroots group with a vision of Sussex County in the year 2030. ​Launched​ in March 2020, we decided that a 10-year benchmark is realistic and attainable. As years go by, we will evaluate our ​progress and adjust future goals but our main focus will remain the same - the bright future of our beloved county.





What we envision by year 2030:

We envision Sussex County, with its natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle, as an attractive and promising place for ​future generations.​ In order for this vision to be realized, ​we are working with the County administration to address the following concerns:

  • Preserving the number one asset of the County- the natural environment, i​ncluding the beaches, bays, trees, wildlife, farmlands, wetlands, clean air, safe drinking water, etc.

  • Improving traffic/road ​safety by ensuring that development plans include current road safety and capacity studies.

  • Enhancing​ local public transportation.

  • Ensuring adequate public facilities for all Sussex County residents​ -
    schools, fire stations, emergency medical services, libraries, parks ​and
    other natural areas​, medical facilities, etc.

  • Adding​ infrastructure​ to serve all County residents and ​to attract high
    paying industries ie., high speed internet, ​greater access to the Delmarva peninsula via air or rail, etc.

  • Attracting more college/university institutions to provide ​job training for future local high-tech industries.

  • Preserving​ historical ​and archeological assets.

Sussex2030's persistent focus will be on ​preserving the County’s natural assets and addressing traffic concerns.​


Sussex2030 Mission

Our mission is to​ support planned growth of the County, including infrastructure​, employment opportunities, advanced education, and improvements in local ordinances, ​while preserving the beauty and environmentally sensitive aspects of the county​.

(This is a letter read at the Sussex Council meeting on 6/15/2021, as a 3-minute public comment.) It is well known that Sussex County's aging in the past decades was led by the huge influx of retirees, spurred by the drain of our young ones seeking better career opportunities. The migration of retirees and the County's lopsided reliance on the housing boom go hand in hand.  How long can this go on? Maybe until Sussex County becomes like Ocean City, Virginia Beach, or Myrtle Beach?  (Photo by Chris Paripa, published in The Dispatch on 5/21/2018) Is that what our children and grandchildren will inherit and be in charge of the land they call home, or will they decide to leave for somewhere else? Then, what?  Towns that are overly populated by elderlies are not sustainable for obvious reasons. FY 2022 Budget Hearing Comments - for P&Z and Council Budget

A comment at the FY 2022 Sussex County Budget Hearing Sussex County's population has grown from 157,000 in the year 2000 to 253,000 in the year 2020 - about a 50% increase. The data used are from the Delaware Population Consortium.  It feels like the county is tearing at its seams. With this explosive growth, certain parts of the County's budget have grown accordingly.  Sussex County's Fiscal Year 2022 budget is $278M. It is nearly 4 times the $74M of Fiscal Year 2000 budget.  Considering the 56% inflation since the year 2000, the proposed budget is about 2.4 times that of the year 2000, 140% increase.   I understand that $45.5M of this year's revenue come from the American Rescue Plan Grant Fund.  So, if we remove that $46M from FY 2022 budget, it is 86% increase with the inflation considered.  I looked at the P&Z Staff Salary budget, and it comes out to be 26% increase since the year 2000.  We know that the work of P&Z staff has increased tremendously in the l
